  Tomé la foto que se encuentra en la página “acerca de mí || about me” en agosto del 2017. Traía en mi mente, desde antes de mudarme a Burlington, desarrollar un blog, el cual fuera mas bien un espacio para tener conversaciones con quienes lo leyeran y conmigo. Pero me comí la mierda. Mañana, después, cuando tenga tiempo. Siempre había una excusa perfecta. Cuando se tiene miedo de ser juzgado y de expresarse por falta de seguridad propia, uno se vuelve sumamente creativo en hallar maneras para auto-boicotearse. La autorreflexión, y el aceptar esa realidad, me ayudó a no tomar personal lo que dice ese otro Luis Alexis en mi cabeza. Entonces, el 23 de julio de 2018, después de pal de cervezas vermonteñas, me hice una cuenta y aquí estamos.

Mi intención con este blog estriba en (1) escribir acerca de aquello que esté relacionado con nuestros sistemas agroalimentarios, especialmente el puertorriqueño, ya sea desde el ámbito científico, político, social o cultural. O una combinación de ellos, ya que todo está relacionado. De igual manera, pretendo (2) servirme de esta plataforma para, como investigador y futuro maestro, diseminar conocimientos y hallazgos científicos de manera simple y contextualizada a nuestro diario vivir. También, (3) exploraré las interrelaciones entre comida, cultura, historia y política. Como dice mi amiga, Vanesa García Polanco, la comida no es solamente comida (food is never just food). Y por último, (4) compartiré mis impresiones y reseñas de libros recientes, especialmente de aquellos de nuestra literatura puertorriqueña. En fin, veo este espacio como una oportunidad para estrechar lazos de amistad y continuar desarrollándome como educador y científico.

Creo fielmente en que el conocimiento debe compartirse. La academia, en ocasiones, falla en hacerlo accesible. Más las personas que estamos allí dentro, que investigamos y utilizamos fondos públicos para nuestros proyectos, también fracasamos en dejarle saber a la gente qué está pasando y cómo nuestros hallazgos impactarán la sociedad. Por lo que, luego de reflexiones constantes, encontré contradictorio pensar así y no tomar acción. Como dijo alguien que no recuerdo: “ser es hacer”. Confío en que este espacio será de mucho provecho para quienes lo lean y para mí. ¡Un abrazo!

I took the picture in the “acerca de mí || about me” page in August 2017. Before moving to Burlington, I carried in my mind the idea of a having a blog that would serve as a space to have conversations with readers, and myself. But I somehow managed to put it aside. Tomorrow, later, when classes end, etc. I’d always find the perfect excuse to not start. It is very easy to boycott oneself when the fear of being judged grabs our minds. As well as the lack of security in one’s abilities. Accepting that reality, and carrying out self-reflection, helped me to not take too personal Luis’ opinions in my head. So, on July 23rd, 2018, after some great Vermonter beers, I made an account, and here we are.

My intention with this blog lies in (1) writing about anything that’s involved with our food systems, specially with the Puerto Rican food system. That includes the scientific, political, social, and cultural dimensions. And a combination of those dimensions because everything is connected. I intend to use this platform to, as a scientist and future teacher, (2) disseminate knowledge and scientific findings in a simple and contextualized manner. Moreover, (3) I will explore the interrelationships between food, culture, history, and politics. As my dear friend Vanesa García Polanco says: food is never just food. Last but no least important, (4) I will share my impressions and reviews about recent books, specially about Puerto Rican literature. I see this space as an opportunity to establish new friendships, and to continue developing myself as a scientist and teacher.

I truly believe that knowledge has to be shared. The academy, in many instances, fails in making knowledge accessible. Also, we, the people within Academy doing research (in some occasions) with public funds, sometimes fail in letting folks know what’s going on, and how/why our research is important for society. We fail in telling people the impact of our studies. As someone said: “to be is to do.” I trust that this space will be great for all of us. Cheers!
